Gibraltar Rock Private Tours
Gibraltar Rock Private Tours – This post will be giving you information on this amazing four-hour private tour around Gibraltar. Showcasing many of their historical points. You will also find below full detail’s of every stop, and what to expect. Having been on many cruises. Where I’ve always had the pleasure of booking their excursions. We then moan about the prices of the tours and not getting what we really want from the excursions.
Gibraltar Rock Private Tours – My friend Donna has been telling me for years to book my own tour excursions. Taking her advice I search the internet and found Gibraltar Rock Private Tours. The website gives you so much information, with lots of different tours to choose from. There were 3 tours that interested us which you can see below. After emailing John, we decided on the 3 hours tour, as our ship was only docking in Gibraltar for 6 hours. It is a set price for the tour for 8 people.
To find out prices you would need to email John info@gibraltar-rock-tours.com. Or check out their website https://www.gibraltar-rock-tours.com. Please make sure you book early as John is already taking booking for 2019.

Gibraltar Rock Private Tours
On the day of our tour, The Independence docked at Gibraltar. As we disembark from the ship, John from Gibraltar Rock Private Tours contacted myself to inform me that he was waiting at front of the cruise terminal. Being greeted by the lovely John who owns Gibraltar Rock Tours. John was holding a sign with our surname on the front. After a quick introduction, John opens the doors to a white Mercedes Vito with Privacy Glass and air con. He started the tour straight away, with all the history of Gibraltar.
The PILLARS OF HERCULES
John was in a queue of traffic. He told us to get out of the van and walk up the hill to Pillars of Hercules. We took t some wonderful photos, and the views were breathtaking, overlooking the Bay and Straits of Gibraltar to North Africa Morocco. People also say this is the end of the world. This took about “5-10 minutes”, John was waiting for us, as we got back into the van, for our next stop.
St. MICHAEL’S CAVE
300 meters above sea level. We were given a “25-minute” visit, to this huge cavern. The cavern is well presented and has interesting and useful interpretation signs all around. The stalagmites and stalactites are quite stunning! To our surprise, there was music to enjoy which co-ordinates with lights and colour shown in the caves. There are some seats to sit on and absorb the surrounding beauty. Please wear sensible shoes as the ground is not level and in some parts wet. The cavern is the main tourist attraction and used for concerts and social events.
BARBARY APES
There are only 200 hundred apes in Gibraltar, the government keeps their numbers down by giving them birth control. The Barbary apes gave us great amusement as did the people who clearly had not read the numerous signs stating not to take food or carrier bags and were then hounded and pounced upon by the apes. I notice a plaque in memory of Michael the ape from The Taxi Drivers, which I thought was sweet.
360 ROUND THE ROCK DRIVE WEST AND EAST COAST, TUNNELS, CITY FORTRESS WALLS
Stand on top of the Rock and you feel as if you were on top of the world. You can see as far as the eyes can see on a good day! Even as far as Africa. The views are breath-taking, please be careful as this is very busy and there are lots of people wanting to take the same photo as you. The city fortress walls are all around Gibraltar.
GREAT SIEGE TUNNEL
You are 100 meters above sea level, we were allowed “25-30 minute” to visit this man-made tunnel. The tunnels were built deep into the rock. I was shocked at how interesting the tunnels were with lots of history and information on the wall as you walk down the tunnels. The tunnels are long and steep, so if you find walking hard his tour is not for you.
CATALAN BAY
John drove us around the back of the rock. Catalan Bay is very beautiful with a lovely beach and choice of fish restaurants, there is also a beautiful hotel. The rock’s Italian descendants started by Genoese Merchants fleeing from Napoleonic wars, who settled in this part of the Mediterranean. We stop at the top to take a quick photo.
EUROPA POINT
Next stop we took a coastal and tunnel drive which takes you to the most southern point in Europe, another photo stop at the shore of the Straits of Gibraltar to North Africa. We were standing between, the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The Trinity Lighthouse, Moorish Mosque, General Sikorski’s Monument and a different view angle of the rock. John pointed out an eagle, who was trying to get to the rocks.
100 TON GUN
Right on the coast, we had a “15 minutes” to take photos and look around. We walked up to the small 100 gun museum and this huge gun battery. Today only two guns remain one in Gibraltar, the other in Malta. The 100-ton gun has never been used.
WWII AIRPORT RUNWAY
For our last stop, we drove across the airport’s runway. RAF and civilians use the airport with daily flights from the UK. A small airport constructed in WWII upon the town’s race track. Driving over the runway, which was exciting as we drove into Spain. John then turned around and drove us back over the runway. Our tour was over, John dropped us off at the shopping centre. So we could look around the shops then walk back to the Cruise terminal.

Oh was so lovely reading this! I live in England but my whole family comes from gib! I absolutely love going and visiting! you’re very lucky the tour took you to Catalan bay because that’s not the tourist beach, it’s actually more where the locals go! (but 100% more beautiful)
Great post and I’m glad to see you enjoyed!
